Lapwing Lodge History (Peesweep)

Lapwing Lodge started Life as a Sanatorium for Coats Mill workers in 1910 at this time the veranda was open to the elements for the patients to be wheeled out onto to recover (fresh air was the only help until we got penicillin) It remained in their owner ship until 1955.

In 1959 it was offered to Paisley Burgh and Renfrew County Council but rejected and building deteriorated, owner ship changed again this time to the Red Cross in 1960 and Paisley Scouts used grounds for camping

In 1968 Renfrewshire County Scout Council negotiate 20 year lease from Health Board the Scouts rented the buildings from Health Board and in 1988 the Renfrew and Inverclyde Regional Scout Council bought Lapwing from Renfrew District Council and started to add to and improve the accommodation and site.

The name was changed in 1983 from Peesweep to Lapwing Lodge.

Lapwing Lodge is wholly owned and run by West Regional Scout Council and is managed on a daily basis by the Lapwing Lodge Management Board.

We have a resident Warden and volunteer camp staff who run the weekends and activities, all the trained camp staff hold the relevant National Governing Body Certificates in their chosen activity.

As 2010 is the 100th Anniversary of the Building we are in the very early stages of planning a celebration, if you have any memorabilia on Lapwing / Peesweep we would be very interested in seeing it, please contact the Warden.

Past Resident of Peesweep

Lapwing is reputed to have a few ghostly presence Cathy Ghosts is said to be that of a young 12 year old girl who died at the sanatorium after nursing her family with the fever. The grey lady who walks the corridors and the voices of the children playing and laughing can sometimes be heard in and around the buildings.
